Living Between Extremes...

I like the word "balance" - but at the same time, I have a healthy wariness of it as well. Balance has a subtle slope to it that can also lead to complacency and compromise. But when it comes to how Jesus held Grace and Truth (John 1) he lived, not in balance, but between these seemingly opposing extremes. Jesus Christ was the absolute extreme of both of these - he was not balanced in his truth, and he was not balanced in his grace - both overflowed out of him as a natural extension of the very essence of who he was. He was fully Truth and he was fully Grace. We cannot understand that any more adequately than we can understand that he was fully God and fully human - our finite, human imaginations can only grasp these mysteries of God in small proportion. We are called to live as a witness to this Grace and Truth. We will never fully embody this tension - but we are called to live as Christ - living and ministering in the tension of both Grace and Truth. John 1:14 says that the glory of God is seen in the Grace and Truth of Jesus Christ. He came into our mess and dwelt among us - that's where God's glory is revealed - in the reality and messiness of our human condition. Living between the extremes of Grace and Truth.
