Rhythms of Sabbath...

R. Paul Stevens contends that of all the Ten Commandments, being negligent of this one has resulted in more deaths than even the prohibition against murder. Isaiah 58 reminds us of the importance of Sabbath, but not in the way we usually think of it. It is not to be a legalistic discipline, but a delight in the Lord. The apostle Paul says that there is freedom in how we keep the Sabbath (1 Cor 14 and Romans 14:5) but we should never lose the Sabbath purpose - the "Sabbath rhythm" of intentional time to be in harmony with God, to have a time of "re-creation", and to enjoy creation. It can be mini-sabbaths each day, a weekly rhythm, or something else.

Enjoying an intentional "Sabbath Rhythm" is extremely counter cultural in our world today. But we are called to have a "personal conviction about the matter" (Romans 14:5). What is your intentional and personal conviction of how you incorporate rhythms of Sabbath in your life? We are no good to a faith community unless we have learned to be alone with God in this way.
